The Pentax Papilio III 8.5x21 WR is a palm-sized Porro-prism binocular that focuses down to about 0.5 m. Pentax's convergence correction system slides the objective lenses as you focus closer, so both eyes stay on the same subject. That makes it suited to butterflies, flowers and museum exhibits as well as normal distance viewing. This one is finished in olive.
Released in October 2025, the Papilio III WR is the first Papilio with weather-resistant construction. All optical elements are fully multi-coated, and selected surfaces also get Pentax's HD Coating for higher transmission and contrast. Aspherical elements and BaK4 prisms keep the image crisp to the edges, and the 15 mm eye relief suits glasses wearers. It weighs about 295 g.

Key Features
- 0.5 m close focus with convergence correction – The objectives shift as you focus closer, so you get a comfortable single image of subjects only half a metre away.
- Weather-resistant construction – This is the first Papilio sealed against rain, mist and splashes, and the eyepieces and front glass carry an anti-stain coating.
- HD Coating over full multi-coating – Selected elements get Pentax's latest high-transmission coating for clearer, higher-contrast views, even into the light.
- Aspherical optics and BaK4 prisms – Sharp, low-distortion images right to the edge of the field.
- Long 15 mm eye relief – Glasses wearers can see the full field of view.
- Full rubber casing – Comfortable grip and better impact protection in a body that fits in the palm.
- Easy adjustments – Dual-axis eye-width adjustment, push-pull helicoid eyepieces and a click-stop dioptre that will not drift.
- Quick-release neck strap – Clips on and off in an instant, and the binocular takes the optional Tripod Adapter U.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I choose the 6.5x21 or the 8.5x21?
Both weigh 295 g and focus to 0.5 m. The 6.5x21 has the wider view (131 m @ 1000 m) and a brighter 3.2 mm exit pupil, which suits close-range nature and gallery use. The 8.5x21 gives more reach (105 m @ 1000 m, 2.5 mm exit pupil) for birds and sport.
How is the Papilio III WR different from the Papilio II?
The optics and 0.5 m close focus are carried over. The III WR adds weather-resistant sealing, an anti-stain coating on the eyepieces and front glass, and HD Coating on some elements.
Is it waterproof?
It is weather-resistant. It handles rain, mist and splashes but is not described as submersible.
Can it go on a tripod?
Yes, with the optional Pentax Tripod Adapter U.
