Digital night vision rifle scopes, monoculars and clip-on units for pest control and after-dark hunting, including ATN and oneleaf.ai. Unlike thermal, digital night vision amplifies available light and shows you a recognisable image, which makes target identification and shot placement easier once you have found the animal.
Most modern units are day/night, so one scope covers both shifts and you are not re-zeroing between them. Detection range depends heavily on the IR illuminator: the supplied units are usually adequate out to 150 to 200 metres, and an aftermarket 850nm or 940nm illuminator will extend that considerably. The 940nm units are effectively invisible to game but cost you some range.

Common questions
Night vision or thermal: which is better for hunting?
Thermal finds animals by their heat at long range, through light scrub and in total darkness; night vision gives a clearer, more detailed picture for identifying the animal and its background but needs an IR illuminator and has shorter range. For pig and fox control most shooters scan with thermal; digital night vision scopes are the lower-cost way to shoot at night.
What does a good night vision scope cost?
Digital day/night riflescopes start around $455 to $1,100 (Bushnell Equinox, Pard, ATN X-Celsior) and laser-rangefinding models such as the ATN X-Sight 5 Pro LRF are about $1,500. Tube night vision and goggles such as the AGM NVG-50 cost $5,000 to $12,000.
Do I need a licence for night vision in NSW?
No. Night vision and thermal optics are not licensed items in NSW or elsewhere in Australia; the rifle they are fitted to is licensed in the normal way. Night hunting for feral animals is permitted on private land with the landholder's permission, but generally not on declared public hunting land.
Can night vision binoculars see in total darkness?
Digital night vision binoculars and monoculars carry a built-in infrared illuminator, so they work in complete darkness out to the range of that IR light, typically 100 to 300 metres. An add-on IR torch extends the range.
