Rimfire Ammunition

Buying Rimfire Ammunition in Australia

Magnum Sports keeps 18 lines of rimfire ammunition on the shelf: .22 LR in standard velocity from Aguila, CCI, Sellier & Bellot and SK, high-velocity hunting loads from Federal Game-Shok, Remington Golden Bullet and Winchester, subsonic and CB loads for quiet pest work, the full SK match range (Standard Plus, Rifle Match, Pistol Match and Long Range Match) and Eley Match for competition, plus .17 HMR from CCI and Hornady and Winchester rat shot.

Rimfire is a Category A calibre in NSW, so any NSW firearms licence that covers a rimfire rifle, or a Category H licence for a .22 pistol, lets you buy it; we sight the licence at the counter when you collect. Rimfire ammunition, like all our ammunition, is collection from the store at Roseville Chase only.

Rimfire rifles are fussy about ammunition: buy a box of two or three standard-velocity loads and shoot groups before you commit to a brick. For a suppressed or quiet rabbit rifle ask for the S&B subsonic or the Remington CBee CB load.

Rimfire ammunition in .22 LR, .22 WMR and .17 HMR, from standard velocity through to match grade.

Rimfire rifles are strikingly fussy about ammunition, and this catches out shooters who have only used centrefire. Two brands of 40-grain .22 LR, both perfectly correct on paper, can group completely differently out of the same barrel. That is normal and it is not a fault. The method that works: buy single boxes of three or four loads, shoot five-shot groups of each at the distance you actually shoot on the same afternoon, then buy the winner in quantity and write down the lot number. Rimfire lots vary, so when you find one your rifle loves, buy deep.

Choosing between types: subsonic stays under the speed of sound so there is no crack from the bullet, which makes it the right choice close to houses and stock, at the cost of range. High velocity gives flatter flight and more effect on target, and is the general-purpose answer. Match is made to tighter tolerances for paper and will usually out-group both.

Ammunition is collection only from our Roseville Chase store. We do not ship ammunition of any kind. Bring a current firearms licence.

      Common questions

What is the best 22LR ammo for rabbits?
A 36 to 40 grain high-velocity hollow point such as Federal Game-Shok 38gr HP ($13) or Remington Golden Bullet ($16) out to 80 metres; for a quieter shot near buildings or stock the Sellier & Bellot subsonic hollow point ($15). For head shots at longer range, a standard-velocity load your rifle groups well with, such as CCI SV or SK Standard Plus.

SK Rifle Match ($19) and SK Long Range Match ($20) for club rifle matches, SK Pistol Match ($17) for Category H shooters, and Eley Match ($39) for serious competition. All are on the shelf; try a few and buy the lot number your rifle likes.
Do I need a licence to buy 22 ammo in NSW?
Yes. Any NSW firearms licence that covers a rimfire rifle (Category A or higher) or a Category H licence for a .22 pistol allows you to buy rimfire ammunition; we sight it at the counter when you collect, as ammunition is not posted.
Do you stock 17 HMR and 22 Magnum?
.17 HMR is in stock in CCI 17gr V-Max and 20gr Game Point and Hornady 20gr XTP ($39 to $41). .22 WMR (22 Magnum) comes and goes; check the page or ask us to hold a box when the next delivery lands.
