About the 7x57mm Mauser

The 7x57mm Mauser dates from 1892 and is one of the most balanced hunting cartridges ever designed. Known in Britain as the .275 Rigby, it earned its reputation on everything from red deer to elephant with long, heavy-for-calibre projectiles at moderate velocity. A 140 grain load runs about 2,700 fps and a 160 to 175 grain load 2,450 to 2,550 fps, with recoil well below a .30-06.

For Australian hunters it is a thoroughly capable fallow, red, sambar and pig cartridge that is easy to shoot well, and the heavier projectiles penetrate deeply on large animals. It fits a standard-length action and remains in the catalogues of Sako, Tikka and several European makers, though it has been passed over by newer 7 mm designs in the mass market.

As with the 6.5x55, factory ammunition is often loaded conservatively for old military rifles. Modern bolt actions can safely use the full-pressure European loads. Reloading unlocks its best performance and .284 projectile choice is wide. Do not confuse it with 7mm-08 Remington, 7x64 or 7mm Remington Magnum.

We can supply 7x57 rifles from Sako and Tikka to order, stock Sako, Norma and Hornady ammunition where available, and carry dies, brass and projectiles for reloaders. Firearms are shipped Australia-wide to your nominated dealer.
