Buying Semi Auto Pistols in Australia

Magnum Sports lists more than 300 semi-automatic pistols and has around 70 available to order today from Beretta, CZ, Walther, Canik, Shadow Systems, Springfield Armory, Heckler & Koch, Sig Sauer, Magnum Research, Laugo Arms, Ruger, Chiappa, GSG, Stoeger and Hammerli. The range covers 9mm competition and service pistols for IPSC and service match, 1911s in .45 ACP for approved disciplines, and rimfire target pistols in .22 LR.

Semi-automatic pistols are Category H in NSW and must have a barrel of at least 120 mm and a magazine of no more than 10 rounds; calibres above .38 (such as .45 ACP) need an approval for an accredited discipline. You need a current Category H licence with club endorsement and a Permit to Acquire for each pistol; since 1 July 2026 the permit is only issued once you show you meet the safe-storage requirements. Probationary licence holders are limited in what they can acquire in the first year. Every pistol is transferred dealer to dealer.

Rimfire target pistols start at about $800, most 9mm competition pistols sit between $1,300 and $2,500, optics-ready and race models from $2,500 to $5,000, and Laugo Alien and custom builds run to $15,000.

Check your discipline approvals before choosing a calibre: 9mm and .22 LR suit almost every NSW club discipline, while .45 ACP 1911s need an approved discipline. Bring your Category H licence, club letter and PTA; we confirm NSW compliance (barrel length and magazine capacity) on every pistol before it leaves the store.

A Category H licence, club membership and a Permit to Acquire are required.
What is the best pistol for IPSC in Australia?

How much does a 9mm pistol cost?
At Magnum Sports 9mm competition and service pistols are mostly $1,300 to $2,500, with optics-ready and race models $2,500 to $5,000. Rimfire target pistols start at about $800.
Can a probationary Category H licence holder buy a 9mm?
Not straight away. NSW probationary pistol licence holders are restricted in the type and number of handguns they can acquire during their first year; tell us where you are in your probation and we will confirm what you can order.
      Do you transfer pistols interstate?
Yes, dealer to dealer to your nominated licensed dealer once your PTA is issued; handgun transfer freight is $30 ($65 to WA). Pistol ammunition is collected in store only.
