Buying 8x57mm IS Rifles in Australia

Magnum Sports lists 11 rifles chambered in 8x57 Mauser, seven of them available today, from Sauer, Sako, Mauser and Tikka. The 8x57 is a long-established European hunting cartridge, and Australian hunters use it on deer, pigs and goats, particularly in bush and timber where shots are moderate and a heavier bullet is useful.

Centrefire rifles are Category B in NSW. You need a current licence in that category plus a Permit to Acquire for each rifle; since 1 July 2026 a Permit to Acquire (PTA) is only issued once the applicant shows they meet the safe-storage requirements, and new and renewed licences run for a maximum of two years. If you live interstate, order online and the rifle is transferred dealer to dealer to your nominated licensed dealer, with longarm freight $65 ($85 to WA).

Entry is the Sauer 100 Classic XT at $1,539, with the Sauer 100 Classic from $1,694 and the Tikka T3x Hunter from $2,199.
