Buying .270 Winchester Rifles in Australia

Magnum Sports lists about 150 rifles chambered in .270 Winchester, with around 60 available to buy today from Tikka, Sako, Sauer, Mauser, Bergara, Savage, Winchester, Browning, Remington, Ruger, Benelli, Franchi, Weatherby, Blaser and Roessler. The .270 has been an Australian favourite since the 1920s: flat-shooting 130 grain loads for goats, pigs and fallow, 150 grain for red deer and sambar, with recoil a step below the .30-06.

All .270 Winchester rifles are centrefire and Category B in NSW, whether bolt-action, lever-action or straight-pull. Every firearm purchase in NSW needs a current licence in the right category and a Permit to Acquire (PTA) for that firearm; since 1 July 2026 a PTA is only issued once you show you meet the safe-storage requirements, and licences now run for a maximum of two years. Interstate buyers order online and we transfer dealer to dealer to your nominated licensed dealer (longarm freight $65, $85 to WA; handguns $30). Ammunition is sold for collection in store only and is never shipped.

Entry .270 rifles start at about $700, most hunting rifles sit between $1,200 and $3,500, and Sako 90, Sauer 404, Mauser M12 and Blaser R8 run from $4,000 to more than $12,000.

      • PricesEntry .270 rifles from about $700, most hunting rifles $1,200–$3,500, premium European rifles $4,000 to $12,000+.
      • AvailabilityAround 60 of the 150 .270 rifles listed can be ordered today; the rest are special order from the distributor — enquire with the store before ordering.

The .270 needs a 22–24 inch barrel to shine, so it suits a standard-weight hunting rifle rather than a short carbine. Choose a 1:10 twist (standard) and 130–150 grain bonded or copper bullets for deer. Popular in-stock choices are the Tikka T3x Lite and Hunter, Sako 90 Hunter and Finnlight, Mauser M18, Sauer 100, Winchester M70 Featherweight, Browning X-Bolt and Benelli Lupo. We fit scopes and stock .270 ammunition from Hornady, Federal, Sako, Norma, Winchester and Remington for collection in store.

      Common questions

What licence do I need for a .270 rifle in NSW?
A Category B licence, as for any centrefire rifle, plus a Permit to Acquire. Since 1 July 2026 the permit is only issued once you show you meet the safe-storage requirements, and licences run for a maximum of two years.
.270 or .30-06 for Australian deer?
Both take every deer species here. The .270 shoots flatter with a little less recoil and suits fallow, goats and open-country shooting; the .30-06 carries heavier 165–180 grain bullets for sambar and red deer in thick country. Ammunition for both is stocked everywhere in Australia.
Which .270 rifles are in stock?
Tikka T3x (Lite, Super Lite, Hunter, Varmint), Sako 90 (Hunter, Finnlight, Peak, Adventure) and S20, Mauser M18, Sauer 100 and 404, Winchester M70, Browning X-Bolt 2, Bergara B14, Savage 110 and Axis, Remington 700, Ruger American Gen II, Benelli Lupo and Franchi Horizon are usually available.
How much does a .270 rifle cost?
At Magnum Sports entry rifles such as the Winchester XPR, Franchi Horizon, Savage Axis and Remington 783 start around $700–$1,100, Tikka, Sako S20, Mauser M18, Sauer 100, Winchester M70 and Bergara sit between $1,200 and $3,500, and Sako 90, Sauer 404, Mauser M12 and Blaser R8 run $4,000 to more than $12,000.
Can you ship a rifle interstate?
Yes. Order online with your licence and PTA details and we transfer the rifle dealer to dealer to a licensed dealer near you for $65 ($85 to WA). Ammunition cannot be shipped and is collected in store only.
