Buying .22 Long Rifle Rifles & Pistols in Australia

Magnum Sports lists about 325 firearms chambered in .22 Long Rifle — more than 240 rifles and around 80 pistols — with over 80 available to buy today from Ruger, CZ, Tikka, Lithgow Arms, Bergara, Savage, Anschutz, Henry, Chiappa, Rossi, Walther, Smith & Wesson, Browning and Hammerli. The .22 LR is the cartridge every shooter starts on: cheap to feed, quiet, accurate, and the standard for small game, pest control, rimfire benchrest and target pistol.

In NSW .22 LR bolt-action, lever-action and single-shot rifles are Category A; self-loading .22 rifles are Category C and restricted. All .22 LR pistols are Category H and need a pistol licence, which in NSW is obtained through an approved pistol club — and in the first six months of a new probationary pistol licence only air pistols and .22 rimfire pistols can be acquired, which makes a .22 the usual first handgun. Every firearm purchase in NSW needs a current licence in the right category and a Permit to Acquire (PTA) for that firearm; since 1 July 2026 a PTA is only issued once you show you meet the safe-storage requirements, and licences now run for a maximum of two years. Interstate buyers order online and we transfer dealer to dealer to your nominated licensed dealer (longarm freight $65, $85 to WA; handguns $30). Ammunition is sold for collection in store only and is never shipped.

Rimfire rifles start at about $450, most .22 LR hunting and plinking rifles sit between $600 and $1,500, and target rifles and match pistols from Anschutz, Tikka, Walther, Pardini and Hammerli run from $2,000 to $7,500.

For a first rifle choose a bolt-action with a threaded barrel (Ruger American Rimfire, CZ 457, Tikka T1x, Lithgow LA101) so a sound moderator can be fitted later if your licence allows; a lever-action Henry or Chiappa suits shooters who want a traditional gun. For a first pistol the Ruger MKIV, Browning Buck Mark, GSG 1911 and Chiappa 1873-22 revolver are the club favourites. We fit and bore-sight scopes and stock .22 LR ammunition from CCI, Winchester, Federal, Eley, SK and Lapua for collection in store.

      Common questions

What licence do I need for a .22 rifle in NSW?
A Category A licence covers bolt-action, lever-action and single-shot .22 LR rifles. Self-loading .22 rifles are Category C and restricted. You also need a Permit to Acquire for each rifle, and since 1 July 2026 the permit is only issued once you show you meet the safe-storage requirements.
Can I buy a .22 pistol in NSW?
Yes, with a Category H pistol licence, obtained through membership of an approved pistol club. New probationary pistol licence holders may only acquire air pistols and .22 rimfire pistols in their first six months, so a .22 such as the Ruger MKIV, Browning Buck Mark or GSG 1911 is normally the first handgun.
Which .22 rifle is best for a beginner?
A bolt-action .22 LR with a threaded barrel and a good trigger: the Ruger American Rimfire, CZ 457, Tikka T1x, Savage Mark II or Lithgow LA101 are the ones we recommend most, from about $600 to $1,500 with a scope package.
How much does a .22 rifle cost in Australia?
At Magnum Sports rimfire rifles start around $450, the popular Ruger, CZ, Tikka, Savage and Lithgow bolt-actions sit between $600 and $1,500, lever-actions from Henry and Chiappa $700–$2,000, and Anschutz, Tikka T1x ACE and Bergara B14R target rifles $2,000–$5,000.
Can you ship a .22 rifle or pistol interstate?
Yes. Order online with your licence and PTA details and we transfer dealer to dealer to a licensed dealer near you — $65 for a rifle ($85 to WA), $30 for a pistol. Ammunition cannot be shipped and is collected in store only.
