Buying .22 Long Rifle Ammunition in Australia

Magnum Sports lists about 150 lines of .22 LR ammunition, and 71 of them are available today. The range covers RWS, CCI, Federal, Remington, Eley, Winchester, Lapua, SK, Norma, Aguila and Sellier & Bellot. The .22 Long Rifle is the most widely used rimfire cartridge in Australia: it handles rabbits and small vermin, it is the round most new shooters learn on, and it is the standard for smallbore rifle, biathlon and .22 pistol competition.

Rifles in .22 LR that are not semi-automatic are Category A, and .22 pistols are Category H. A NSW dealer may only sell ammunition to a person holding a licence or permit for a firearm of that calibre, so Magnum Sports sights your licence at the counter. All ammunition is collection only from our Roseville Chase store; it is never posted or couriered. You can order online and we will put it aside for pick-up.

Plinking and hunting boxes start at about $8 for a 50-round pack such as Aguila 40gr HV, and the typical line sits around $24. Match ammunition from Eley Tenex, Lapua and RWS R50 runs roughly $40–$55 a box, and bulk packs and buckets go up to about $310.

For rabbits, high-velocity hollow points such as Federal Game-Shok, Remington Thunderbolt, CCI Uppercut or Norma Hunter-22 are the usual choice, and subsonic hollow points from RWS, Highland or Remington suit quieter work around sheds and close to houses. Club and standard-velocity loads like Sellier & Bellot Club, SK Standard Plus or RWS Club keep practice cheap. For competition, start with SK Rifle Match or RWS Rifle Match and test Eley Tenex, Lapua Polar Biathlon or RWS R50 in your own rifle, because rimfire accuracy is very barrel-specific.
