The 7x64mm Brenneke is Europe's answer to the .270 and .280, designed by Wilhelm Brenneke in 1917 and still the standard 7 mm deer cartridge across Germany, France and Austria. It drives a 140 grain projectile at about 2,950 fps and a 160 to 175 grain at 2,600 to 2,750 fps, giving it a useful edge over the 7x57 for longer shots and heavier game.
The 7x65R is the same cartridge with a rimmed case for break-action rifles, drillings and combination guns. Ballistics are near identical, but the two do not interchange: a 7x64 rifle needs rimless 7x64 ammunition and a 7x65R gun needs the rimmed round, which has its own page.
In Australia it is mostly found in European rifles from Sauer, Blaser, Merkel and Sako. It is an excellent sambar and red deer cartridge with recoil around .30-06 level. Factory ammunition from RWS, Sako, Norma and Sellier & Bellot is available but not stocked as widely as the American calibres, so plan ahead before a trip.
We can supply 7x64 rifles to order, stock RWS and Sako ammunition where available, and carry dies, brass and projectiles for reloaders. Firearms are shipped Australia-wide to your nominated dealer.
