Decide first whether you want to detect or to shoot. A handheld monocular finds animals faster and is safer to scan with than a rifle; a thermal scope or clip-on is for taking the shot. For foxes and pigs inside 200 metres a 35 mm lens on a 384 sensor is enough; for open country and positive identification further out, look at 50 mm lenses, 640 sensors and a built-in laser rangefinder.
