Magnum Sports lists 29 loads of 8x57 Mauser ammunition, and 13 are available today. Norma has the deepest range, followed by Sellier & Bellot and Sako, with Hornady, Federal, Highland, Winchester and Barnes also listed. The collection covers the rimless 8x57 JS (also marked IS), the rimmed 8x57 JRS (IRS) used in drillings and break-action rifles, and the older 8x57 JR. The 8x57 remains a dependable deer and pig cartridge in Australia, carried in older military-pattern rifles as well as modern European hunting guns.
8x57 ammunition can only be sold by a NSW dealer to a person who holds a licence or permit for a firearm in that calibre; Magnum Sports checks the licence at the counter. Every box is collected in person from the Roseville Chase store, as ammunition is never posted or couriered. You can still order online so it is set aside for you.
The lowest-priced load is Highland 175gr Pointed Soft Point at $59, with Sellier & Bellot 196gr SPCE at $65. A typical box is around $110. The upper end includes Barnes TTSX at $186 and the Sako Range Speedhead FMJ at $199.
Match the designation on your barrel exactly: JS or IS loads are for rimless bolt-action rifles, JRS or IRS loads are rimmed for break-actions and drillings, and the JR is an older, different bore, so they are not interchangeable. For deer and pigs in a JS rifle, Sellier & Bellot 196gr SPCE and Norma Whitetail are good value, while Norma Oryx and Sako Hammerhead give more controlled expansion. Drilling owners can choose Sellier & Bellot or Norma 196gr in JRS, or the Sako Hammerhead IRS.
