Buying .45-70 Government Ammunition in Australia

Magnum Sports lists 18 loads of .45-70 Government, and 14 are available today. Hornady, Barnes, Federal and Remington lead the range, with Winchester, Sellier & Bellot and Nosler also listed. The .45-70 dates from the black-powder era and is now chambered mainly in lever-action and single-shot rifles; in Australia it is a heavy-bullet, short-range cartridge for pigs, deer and buffalo in thick country.

Under NSW rules a dealer can only sell .45-70 ammunition to a holder of a licence or permit for a firearm of that calibre, and Magnum Sports sights the licence at the counter. Ammunition is never posted or couriered: every order is collected from the Roseville Chase store. You can order online to have it held for you.

The least expensive load available is Federal Power-Shok 300gr FN at $85, close to Winchester Super X 300gr JHP at $86. A typical box costs about $111. Copper and premium loads reach $183 for Barnes Harvest SPH 300gr.

Remington lists both a Full Pressure and a Reduced Pressure 405gr Core-Lokt: the reduced load is the safer choice for older or lighter actions, and full-pressure loads should only go in rifles the maker rates for them. For pigs and deer, Federal Power-Shok, Remington 300gr SJHP and Hornady LEVERevolution 325gr are good all-rounders. For buffalo and big boars, heavier or tougher bullets such as Sellier & Bellot 405gr SP, Federal Hammer Down or Barnes TSX FN penetrate deeper. Hornady Sub-X 410gr is a subsonic option.
