Buying .44 Calibre Percussion Revolvers in Australia

Magnum Sports lists 8 .44 calibre percussion revolvers, all made by Pietta, including reproductions of the 1851 Navy, 1860 Army, 1858 Remington and 1862 Police. None are available to order today. These cap-and-ball revolvers are loaded with black powder and lead balls and are shot in black-powder and historical handgun events.

Percussion revolvers are handguns, so they need a Category H licence and a Permit to Acquire (PTA) in NSW. Since 1 July 2026 a PTA is only issued once you show you meet the safe-storage requirements, and licences now run for a maximum of two years. Because .44 is larger than .38 calibre, these revolvers are only approved for specific accredited events such as Western Action; check your club accreditation before ordering.

Prices run from $789 for the 1851 Navy Yank to $1,388 for the 1858 Remington Special, with most around $900.

The 1858 Remington, with its top strap, is the usual choice for target and Western Action shooters, and the Target versions add adjustable sights. The 1851 Navy and 1860 Army suit shooters who want a period-correct Colt pattern. The stainless 1858 Target is easier to keep clean after black powder.
