Buying .44-40 Winchester Rifles & Pistols in Australia

Magnum Sports lists 32 firearms in .44-40 Winchester, 28 rifles and 4 revolvers, and 15 can be ordered today. Uberti makes most of them, with Henry, Chiappa, Pietta and Winchester alongside. The .44-40 (.44 WCF) dates from the 1873 Winchester and is now shot mainly in Western Action matches and for short-range recreational shooting, in reproduction lever-action, single-shot and revolver designs.

The lever-action and single-shot rifles here are Category B, so you need a Category B licence and a Permit to Acquire (PTA) for each one; since 1 July 2026 a PTA is only issued once you show you meet the safe-storage requirements, and new and renewed licences run for a maximum of two years. Revolvers such as the Uberti Cattleman are Category H, and handguns over .38 calibre are only approved for specific accredited events such as Western Action and metallic silhouette, so check your club accreditation before ordering. NSW reforms moving lever-action rifles into Category C have passed but are not yet in force; current categories apply until it commences.

Revolvers start at $1,259 for the in-stock Uberti 1873 Cattleman Brass. Rifles in stock start at $1,949 for the Uberti Revolver Carbine and $2,053 for the Chiappa Little Sharps, and Uberti 1866, 1873 and 1860 Henry rifles mostly run $2,959–$3,799. The top in-stock rifle is the Henry Original Henry Deluxe Engraved at $7,232, with Henry H11 limited editions to $9,999 on order.

      • Prices$997–$9,999: revolvers from about $1,000, Uberti lever rifles mostly $2,959–$3,799, Henry originals to $9,999.

For Western Action, a matched pair of an Uberti 1873 Carbine or 1866 Carbine with an Uberti 1873 Cattleman or 1858 New Army Conversion revolver is a common setup, since both use the same cartridge. If you want the longer sight radius and extra weight for steady shooting, the Uberti 1873 Rifle with octagonal or half-octagonal barrel and the 1860 Henry rifles are in stock. Collectors after a closer copy of the original Henry should look at the Henry Original Henry Deluxe Engraved, while the Chiappa Little Sharps offers a single-shot option. Ammunition is collection only from the store.
