Buying .357 Magnum Ammunition in Australia

Magnum Sports lists 41 .357 Magnum loads, and 16 can be ordered today. Winchester, Remington, Hornady, Fiocchi, Sellier & Bellot and Barnes have the most choice, with Blazer, Federal, Geco, CCI, Speer, PPU and Magtech also listed. The .357 Magnum is a revolver cartridge that also feeds many lever-action rifles, so in Australia it serves handgun target shooting, Western Action and short-range hunting from lever carbines. Loads run from 110 to 180 grain, covering jacketed soft points, hollow points, lead wadcutters and semi-wadcutters, plus CCI shotshells.

A NSW dealer can only sell ammunition to someone holding a licence or permit for a firearm of that calibre, so we sight your licence at the counter. A .357 revolver is held on a Category H licence and a .357 lever rifle on Category B. All ammunition is collected in person from our Roseville Chase store and is never posted or couriered; you can order online to have it put aside.

The lowest listed box is Hornady 125gr XTP at $39 (on order); in stock, CCI 38/357 shotshell starts at $42 and PPU 158gr SJHP at $53. The median box is about $68, around the Sellier & Bellot, Federal Fusion and Remington HTP loads. The top end is $111 for Remington 158gr lead SWC Wheelgun in stock and $147 for Winchester Super X 158gr JHP.

For club and Western Action shooting, lead and full-metal-jacket loads such as the Remington 158gr lead SWC Wheelgun and Sellier & Bellot 158gr FMJ keep practice costs down. For short-range hunting from a lever carbine, look at Hornady 140gr FTX LEVERevolution or the Remington 158gr SP and 180gr SJHP HTP loads. CCI 38/357 shotshells are a specialist load for very close-range pests.
