Buying .300 Winchester Magnum Rifles in Australia

Magnum Sports lists about 300 rifles chambered in .300 Winchester Magnum, with more than 110 available to buy today from Tikka, Sako, Sauer, Bergara, Blaser, Weatherby, Mauser, Verney-Carron, Benelli, Ruger, Savage and Franchi. The .300 Win Mag is the standard long-range big-game magnum in Australia: sambar, red deer, scrub bulls and camels at distance, and a favourite for long-range target work.

All .300 Winchester Magnum rifles are centrefire and Category B in NSW, whether bolt-action or straight-pull. Every firearm purchase in NSW needs a current licence in the right category and a Permit to Acquire (PTA) for that firearm; since 1 July 2026 a PTA is only issued once you show you meet the safe-storage requirements, and licences now run for a maximum of two years. Interstate buyers order online and we transfer dealer to dealer to your nominated licensed dealer (longarm freight $65, $85 to WA; handguns $30). Ammunition is sold for collection in store only and is never shipped.

Entry .300 Win Mag rifles start at about $950, most hunting rifles sit between $1,600 and $4,000, and Sako 90, Sauer 404, Blaser R8 and precision rifles run from $6,000 to more than $15,000.

Recoil is the deciding factor: choose a rifle of at least 3.5 kg, a good recoil pad and, where your licence allows, a muzzle brake or sound moderator on a threaded barrel. A 24–26 inch barrel is needed to get the full magnum velocity. We fit scopes with the extra eye relief a magnum needs, and .300 Win Mag ammunition from Hornady, Federal, Sako, Norma and Winchester is stocked for collection in store.

      Common questions

What licence do I need for a .300 Win Mag rifle in NSW?
A Category B licence, as for any centrefire rifle, plus a Permit to Acquire for the rifle. Since 1 July 2026 the permit is only issued once you show you meet the safe-storage requirements, and licences run for a maximum of two years.
Is .300 Win Mag too much for Australian hunting?
Not for large game. It is the most popular magnum for sambar, red and rusa deer, scrub bulls and long-range shots on goats and pigs. For fallow deer, goats and pigs inside 300 metres a .308 Win, .270 Win or 6.5 Creedmoor will do the job with far less recoil.
Which .300 Win Mag rifles are in stock?
Tikka T3x (Lite, Super Lite, Super Varmint), Sako 90 and S20, Sauer 100 and 404, Bergara B14 and Premier, Mauser M18, Ruger American Gen II and Hawkeye, Savage 110, Benelli Lupo, Franchi Horizon and Verney-Carron are usually available, with Blaser R8 and Weatherby Mark V to order.
How much does a .300 Win Mag rifle cost?
At Magnum Sports entry rifles such as the Franchi Horizon, Ruger American and Mossberg Patriot start around $950–$1,300, Tikka, Sako S20, Bergara and Sauer 100 models sit between $1,600 and $4,000, and Sako 90, Sauer 404, Blaser R8 and Weatherby Mark V run $6,000 to more than $15,000.
Can you ship a rifle interstate?
Yes. Order online with your licence and PTA details and we transfer the rifle dealer to dealer to a licensed dealer near you for $65 ($85 to WA). Ammunition cannot be shipped and is collected in store only.
