.243 Winchester Rifles

Buying .243 Winchester Rifles in Australia

Magnum Sports lists about 210 rifles chambered in .243 Winchester, with nearly 90 available to buy today from Tikka, Lithgow Arms, Savage, Sako, Bergara, Sauer, Remington, Ruger, Weatherby, Mossberg, Howa, Voere, Franchi and Henry. The .243 is the classic Australian farm and first-centrefire rifle: light recoil, flat shooting, and legal and effective on foxes, goats, pigs and fallow deer with the right bullet.

All .243 Winchester rifles are centrefire and Category B in NSW, whether bolt-action, lever-action or straight-pull. Every firearm purchase in NSW needs a current licence in the right category and a Permit to Acquire (PTA) for that firearm; since 1 July 2026 a PTA is only issued once you show you meet the safe-storage requirements, and licences now run for a maximum of two years. Interstate buyers order online and we transfer dealer to dealer to your nominated licensed dealer (longarm freight $65, $85 to WA; handguns $30). Ammunition is sold for collection in store only and is never shipped.

Entry .243 rifles start at about $700, most hunting rifles sit between $1,100 and $2,500, and Sako 90, Sauer 404 and precision rifles run from $3,500 to $8,000 or more.

The .243 is the ideal first centrefire and a great choice for young or recoil-sensitive shooters — pair it with 55–75 grain loads for foxes and pests and 90–100 grain loads for goats, pigs and fallow deer. A 1:8 or 1:9 twist barrel (Lithgow LA102, Bergara, Sauer 100) will stabilise the heavier bullets; most factory rifles are 1:10 and suit up to 100 grains. We fit scope packages and stock .243 ammunition from Hornady, Federal, Sako, Winchester and Remington for collection in store.

      Common questions

What licence do I need for a .243 rifle in NSW?
A Category B licence, as for any centrefire rifle, plus a Permit to Acquire. Since 1 July 2026 the permit is only issued once you show you meet the safe-storage requirements, and licences run for a maximum of two years.
Is a .243 enough for deer in Australia?
For fallow deer and goats with a 90–100 grain premium bullet, yes. For red deer, sambar or scrub bulls choose a heavier cartridge such as .270 Win, .308 Win, .30-06 or 6.5 Creedmoor. The .243 is outstanding on foxes, pigs and goats and is one of the best first centrefires.
Which .243 rifles are in stock?
Tikka T3x (Lite, Super Lite, Super Varmint, Hunter), Lithgow LA102, Savage 110 and Axis, Sako 90 and S20, Bergara B14, Sauer 100, Remington 783 and 700, Ruger American Gen II, Voere, Franchi Horizon and the Henry Long Ranger lever-action are usually available.
How much does a .243 rifle cost?
At Magnum Sports entry rifles such as the Savage Axis, Remington 783, Mossberg Patriot and Ruger American start around $700–$1,100, Tikka, Lithgow, Sako S20, Bergara and Sauer 100 models sit between $1,100 and $2,500, and Sako 90 and Sauer 404 rifles run $3,500 to $8,000.
Can you ship a rifle interstate?
Yes. Order online with your licence and PTA details and we transfer the rifle dealer to dealer to a licensed dealer near you for $65 ($85 to WA). Ammunition cannot be shipped and is collected in store only.
