Buying .243 Winchester Ammunition in Australia

Magnum Sports lists 55 .243 Winchester loads, and 39 of them can be ordered today. Hornady and Federal have the widest choice, with Norma, Winchester, Remington, Sako, Sellier & Bellot, Browning, Barnes and Geco also in stock, plus Fiocchi, OSA and Highland when available. The .243 Win is one of the most common centrefire calibres in Australia: light 55–80 grain bullets suit foxes and other vermin, while 90–105 grain bullets are used on goats, pigs and smaller deer.

A NSW dealer may only sell .243 Winchester ammunition to someone holding a licence or permit for a firearm in that calibre, and Magnum Sports sights your licence at the counter. All ammunition is collection only from the Roseville Chase store; it is never posted or couriered. You can order online to have your boxes put aside for pickup.

The cheapest in-stock boxes are $52 (Remington Core-Lokt 100gr and High Performance 80gr) and $54 (Federal Power-Shok). A typical box costs about $82, the price of Federal Fusion 95gr or Hornady 87gr SST Lite. Premium hunting loads such as Federal 95gr Berger Hybrid Hunter, Federal 90gr ELD-X and Barnes 80gr TTSX run $107–$122, and bulk options include a Sellier & Bellot 50-round pack at $139 and a Norma Vermin Xtreme ammo can at $1,356.

For goats, pigs and deer, choose a controlled-expansion load such as Sako Gamehead 90gr or 100gr, Norma Oryx 100gr, Federal Fusion 95gr or Hornady 95gr SST. If you want lead-free, Barnes 80gr TTSX, Hornady 80gr CX and Winchester Copper Impact 85gr are on the shelf. For high-volume practice, the Sellier & Bellot 100gr SP 50-round bulk pack keeps the cost per shot down.
