Buying .177 Air Rifles in Australia

Magnum Sports lists 105 .177 air rifles and air pistols, and 43 of them can be ordered today. FX Airguns, Norica and Diana make up most of the range, with Walther, Pardini, Hammerli, BSA, Gamo, Stoeger and Crosman alongside. The .177 (4.5 mm) pellet is the standard calibre for 10-metre target rifle and pistol, and it is also a popular choice for plinking, training juniors and short-range control of small pests.

In NSW an air rifle is a Category A firearm, so you need a current Category A licence and a Permit to Acquire (PTA) for each one. Air pistols such as the Hammerli AP20 and Walther LP500 are Category H handguns; a probationary Category H holder is limited to .22 rimfire and air pistols for the first six months. Since 1 July 2026 a PTA is only issued once the applicant shows they meet the safe-storage requirements, and new and renewed licences run for a maximum of two years.

Spring and gas-ram break-barrels in stock start at about $330 (Crosman Vital Shot, Diana 11) and most Norica and Diana models sit between $400 and $900. The middle of the range is around $1,800, where FX Dreamline and DRS PCP rifles start. In-stock top end is the FX DRS MDT Pro at $5,680, and Walther and Pardini match rifles run to $6,759 on special order.

For a first air rifle or a junior shooter, a Diana 250, Norica Dragon or BSA Comet Evo break-barrel is simple to use and cheap to run. For pest work and field target, a regulated PCP such as the FX Dreamline, FX DRS, FX Panthera or FX Impact M4 gives a quieter, more consistent shot and a multi-shot magazine. For 10-metre competition the Hammerli AR20 Pro rifle and AP20 or AP20 Pro pistols are in stock, and Walther LG400, LP500 and Pardini GPR1 or K12 models can be ordered in. Pellets are collection only from the Roseville Chase store.
