Dealer-to-Dealer Firearm Transfers in Australia: How They Work and What They Cost

You can buy a firearm online from Magnum Sports anywhere in Australia: we send it by approved freight to a licensed firearms dealer you nominate near you, and you collect it there with your licence and permit. Firearms are never sent to a private address.

This is how dealer-to-dealer transfers work in practice, what they cost, and how long they take.

How a dealer-to-dealer transfer works

  1. Choose the firearm and nominate a dealer. On the product page, choose to have it sent to your dealer and name a licensed dealer near you. Call the dealer first to confirm they will receive it and what they charge.
  2. Get your permit in your own state. You apply for a Permit to Acquire (or your state's equivalent) through your own state's firearms registry. In NSW a first PTA has a 28-day waiting period; other states set their own rules.
  3. Send us your licence and permit. We need a current licence of the correct category and, where required, your permit before the firearm is dispatched. We hold a paid firearm free for 30 days while your permit comes through.
  4. We dispatch to your dealer. Once payment has cleared and your paperwork is checked, we record the transfer in our dealer register and send the firearm to your dealer by firearms-approved freight.
  5. Collect from your dealer. Your dealer checks your licence and permit, records the acquisition and releases the firearm to you.

What it costs

Item Cost
Freight, longarm (rifle or shotgun) $65 ($85 to WA)
Freight, handgun $30 ($65 to WA)
Receiving dealer's fee Set by your dealer; ask them before you order
Your permit Set by your state (NSW PTA: $30)

Going the other way, if another dealer or a private seller sends a firearm to us for you, our transfer fee is $50 for a used firearm and $100 for a new firearm received from another dealer, plus freight.

How long it takes

Allow 1 to 2 business days for us to dispatch and roughly 5 to 14 days in transit, depending on your location. Most of the wait is usually the permit: if you have not applied yet, start that first.

Ammunition is not posted

We sell ammunition, primers and propellant for collection from our Roseville Chase store only, to a licence holder for that calibre. Buy ammunition from your receiving dealer or another local store.

Frequently asked questions

Can a firearm be delivered to my home?

No. Firearms bought online are only sent to a licensed dealer, who releases them to you once your licence and permit are checked.

Can I buy from Magnum Sports if I live interstate?

Yes. Nominate a licensed dealer in your state and hold the permit your state requires. Your licence must cover the category of firearm you buy.

Which dealer should I nominate?

Any licensed firearms dealer near you who agrees to receive the transfer. Call them first to confirm their receiving fee.
